Fasching, originated in several German-speaking regions of Europe, such as Austria and Bavaria and the Rhineland, Aachen, Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz almost 1000 years ago. Like Carnival, and Mardi Gras each has its traditions in ancient Spring festivals, prior to Easter., Carnival has been primarily celebrated in areas, such as Brazil, Columbia, Dominican Republic, Bolivia and Ecuador, even in Venice, Italy! The word Carnival is Latin and literally means "to give up meat" as they usually do during the fasting days of Lent when more fish is eaten. Mardi Gras got its start in 1699 when the French first celebrated "Fat Tuesday," and is a day to indulge on rich foods before the fasting often done before Easter. All three festivals are known for their bright, colorful costumes and loud music and are a joyful celebration to enjoy life for young and old.
